They all knew I was cooking so they all came for dinner and to show off the ash virgin sneaker to me. Now that all the step daughters are grown and living on their own apartments, we only see one another not often anymore. The older one comes to the house quite often than the younger one because the two boys (the grandkids) play with Isabella but the 20 one year old, we only see her on special occasions and only when I have pancit molo cooked. And, that happened last weekend.

Trade Show Is Coming

I was informed by the coordinator that the company’s trade show in April is not cancelled. There had been rumors coming out at the end of the year that maybe it will be postponed because some of our distributors backed out and there were not enough reservations made. I guess they were able to work out some deals.

We have two months to prepare. We still have the logo canopy for the entrance of the hotel that we have been using for years. It is going to be at the same venue so they staff basically know what to do with regards to the trade show carpet plus the logo mats from different suppliers. There will be classes held simultaneously while the trade show is ongoing so interested parties can just call my job for reservations and schedule. Lunch, snacks and dinner are provided by us too.

I hope we get a lot of participants this year and if we do my boss is planning to do this twice a starting next year. He plans to split the cooling and heating systems into two shows. This will be more work but everything is still in the planning stage yet. For now, we have to concentrate and focus on this forthcoming show.

2. Go to the mall to buy to buy something.

3. Go to the oriental store to buy fish, shrimp and veggies. I hope they have tikoy, btw. kung hei fat choi!

4. Cook dinner early.

5. Watch with the family the NFL Championship Game between NY Giants vs. San Francisco 49ers.

The most awaited snow of the season has come. Winter is not winter when it does not snow in our area. To me, it is incomplete. This snow is not really a snow storm but we got around 3 inches since 5 am this morning. My daughter just cannot wait to be outside and play. She helped me clean the car but more of playing for her. She does not want to go back inside the while i was already freezing! Just love being in the snow.

Moving into the dorm

I am finally moved into my college dorm. I never thought it would be this great. College has been fabulous so far. It is everything I hoped it would be. My hall is very friendly. I have met several girls whom I get along with very well. We have a lot in common and after one week, we are already best friends. My sister was kind enough to help me move all my stuff into the dorm and I think she was in shock. Her dorm was terrible. The roof was falling down, the beds were broken and only one shower worked. When she saw my walk-in closet, she thought I was spoiled. I am not going to tell her the rooms also have direct TV. She will probably pitch a fit, if she ever finds out. My sister loved college too and told me I would make some of the best memories here. So far, she has been right. I can’t wait to meet more people and maybe even find a special someone.

She Turned A Year Older

She turned 8 years old last Sunday. We celebrated her birthday at the bowling lanes with her step sisters and families, nephews and friends. It was just a family affair. For two hours, they played unlimited bowling then at the arcade. By the time the two hours is done, they were all hungry so we all went to a Chinese buffet for dinner. We all had fun and came home so full.

She Does Not Fit Anymore - Almost!

There are reasons why i still like my daughter on the shopping cart when we go shopping. First, I am always scared that she gets lost. You know how kids sometimes (most of the time actually), they just disappear in a second and you be crazy looking for her all over the place. Sometimes i find her under the racks of clothes or at the toys section without even telling me although I always tell her "do not go anywhere, just stay by mommy." It is for her safety, hearing all those horrifying stories of kids getting lost in the store, God forbid. And also, she likes it being on the cart. But now that she is almost 8 years old, it is a struggle to take her in and out of the cart. If my husband is not with us, i cannot do it. Some carts are too small for her already!

It's Back To Work

So how was everybody's thanksgiving weekend? Are you one of the millions of people who went for a Black Friday shopping? Well, I did a little of it but we did not go and line up before 12 midnight of Thursday or early friday morning. We enjoyed out thanksgiving feast, slept late and woke up late on Friday. We went to shop but not at outlets or big malls.

Next holiday to look forward to is christmas and new years but for now, i gotta go to work.

At Ethan's Birthday

It was a night with the fam bam for the celebration of the step daughter's oldest son, that makes him my daughter's nephew. It was all family and friends and our kids. She Is In A Play

They have been practicing this play for 8 weeks. We knew from the beginning when is the show but when my class started in October, on the play date itself, i have an exam and i cannot just call out. I was so disappointed. It's my daughter's first play and I cannot go to see her. When i told Isabella about the situation she was not really happy about it but she understands and hubby will be there.

So it was the day of the show. I stopped by the house before proceeding to school to make sure she has her costume right, then we all left together at 5:30 pm. Mom is going to school, then papa and Isabella to the play. First part of the play was dinner. As I was halfway to school, my professor called that classes were cancelled due to power outage!!!!OMG!... My teacher just don't know how his phone call made me soooo happy. I made a u-turn and went to the school. Isabella was so happy to see me. The play did not even start yet when i got there. It was still dinner time.

So mom did not miss the play after all.

Halloween 2011

In some areas, halloween was rescheduled to friday because of the widespread power failure that day. Luckily my town was spared from the outages brought by the October snow storm although school was cancelled that Halloween day. What a perfect day to have no class, right? So, kids started early in their trick or treating.

For many years, i go with two kids; my daughter and my friend's son but now that he is in middle school already, he does not want to go trick or treating so my daughter went solo although she met a lot of classmates and friends along the way.

She Was A Gypsy

My daughter was a gypsy/fortune teller last Halloween. This was taken during the Halloween parade held at school. Although it was a day late because of the snow storm and cancellation of classes that Monday, kids still had a grand time celebrating halloween. My job was closed that day because of power failure so mommy was so happy to take pictures. More photos of trick or treating to follow.

Road Is Closed

Our street was closed when we woke up Sunday morning because of this tree blocking the whole street. It fell right on top of the hood of a parked car. I think I did not get too close when i took the picture so that you can see the car underneath. This is minimal compared to what others has suffered. And, this tree did not cause any power outage in our street. We are very thankful for that.

New Apartment Mailboxes Needed

They are saying that the damage of the recent snow storm we had is more than what Hurricane Irene. I am not really sure if that is true but for the first time, the apartment mailboxes downstairs were toppled by the recent storm. The management has to replace it with a new set of commercial mailboxes for the different units. I hope they will get a bigger size cluster mailboxes to fit all parcels and packages. It has been a problem when you have larger packages, the mailman would just leave them at the counter but sometimes nobody is there to put them away.

This is the perfect size for our building. This is the USPS 13 door standard cluster box unit with B size doors. It is almost 5 inches in height and 12 inches width which could fit small to medium sized packages.

I already got a phone call that we are going to open at work tomorrow. The power was not restored yet but there are bigger generators that are running now. My boss had too much of these two big storms already and always it happens when he is not around. This is only the first one for the winter. I wonder what more is coming. I hope the winter will not be that bad this year.

No Power on Halloween

There was no school yesterday due to the damage brought by the recent October snow storm. I decided to bring her to work but when I got to my job, I was surprised why all my co-workers were outside the building. My cell phone was ringing too so when I picked it up it was one of the guys calling me not to come to work anymore because we do not have power at work too. It was pitch black when we tried to enter the office. At our warehouse I saw people checking the flammable cabinet storage making sure that no leaks on any products stored. Those guys were just using emergency lights to navigate through our warehouse. You cannot miss these flammable lockers in very bright yellow even with very little light. The other flammable locker right by the door was not damaged by the storm.

So it is going to be a wait and see situation today. I called the office, not even the answering system is picking up. We got snowed over the weekend. It was a northeaster. It was bad with some areas getting up to 12 inches of snow. The trees have not lost their leaves yet, they have not changed colors yet but here comes the snow. A lot of tree branches snapped falling into cars and houses. They got overloaded by the snow and a lot of people lost power.

I could not say that it was the first snow of the season because it is not even winter yet. Hope by tomorrow it would be safe for kids to go trick or treating with no ice on the roads or walkways.

Her Jacket Is Missing

It would be something new if I come home with no reports of any losses or missing something from school. Yesterday she lost her money for breakfast, it is only a dollar but I am trying to teach her to be responsible with her personal things. I thought it was only the dollar incident but when we were about to leave out today, she told me she does not have her jacket. She forgot to take it from the kids lockers before dismissal time yesterday. These lockers for kids are located right at the hallway where they are accessible for when the kids need something. I hope her jacket is inside the childrens lockers. If she left it somewhere else, I doubt if she would be able to get it back because that is a uniform jacket and I did not write her name on the tag.

I wonder what will be the news today. She calls me right away as soon as they (with her dad) get home from school. I love it when she tries to reason out during the time I tried to ask her what happened in school. Kids are fun, really!

My brother is trying to convince me to go green. He has always been an advocate for the environment and lately he has been teaching me ways in which I can save energy. He first told me that I needed to find reliant energy providers so that I could save on my power bill. He came over and cleaned my refrigerator coils so my fridge would run more efficiently. He is always getting onto me for leaving on lights when I am not in the room. I'm back to school again after a summer break. Today was my first day. My class was from 6pm up to 10pm. I have one Filipina classmate, also a mom like me. We already exchanged numbers just in case we need to call each other. Our next class will be Thursday.

A parents-teachers meeting was held tonight at the school gym discussing the different projects for the school. Our new president presented all the plans including the Halloween night for kindergarten to third graders and fourth and fifth graders. She also mentioned the long-term plan of expanding the school to accommodate pre-k students in the future. Right now they only have the Kindergarten at this school. They also want to upgrade the classroom audio systems for all levels. Although the bed at the bottom where she sleeps has rails but sometimes she still falls while sleeping. How it happens? Nobody knows. She does not remember anything when she wakes up.

So we bought her a full size bed. It is going to be delivered by next week including the mattress. I still have enough time to shop for mattress covers and bed skirts. I do not have any full size sheets at home. We only have the queen and twin size sheets for our queen bed and the bunk beds. There is no need to buy pillow cases. I have a lot of them in standard size although she wants the pink satin pillow cases that would match her new bed sheets.

My daughter is excited with her room makeover. Her room needs some painting too but I would leave that for her dad to do. I hope it will be done before her birthday this December.

My daughter came home from school with her fundraising envelope. I forgot about this for a while and now it is time to do it again. There are two catalogs, one is all about cakes, pizza, cookies and pies while the other consists of holidays gift items, gift wrap, jewelry, magazine subscriptions and useful tools for the home. Meet The Teacher

It was the back to school night last night at my daughter's school. It is during this time that the principal will lay out plans for the school year, the policies and rules of the school, introduce the teachers and staff and for the parents to meet their kids teacher for the first time. After the principal's talk at the gymnasium, parents went to their child's classroom, sat on her desk, look what is one her desk, read her journal, etc. I had fun reading my daughter's journal. It is a free flowing/anything goes journal that she writes everyday just to develop her writing ability. I am surprised where she gets all her thoughts. It was funny and of course in almost every page, mom is there. She even drew me on some days. lol.

Her teacher is an 18 year old veteran in teaching. She discussed her methods of teaching, what goes inside the classroom everyday, about homework and funny things about the kids. Her being a mom with two kids in school is a plus to me. She also gave us her email address and phone number for any questions we like to ask about our child.

Isabella has a note for me on top of her desk. We, as parents, were also given a paper where we can write something for our kids. The kids will see those notes once they get to class today but my poor child is out today because she is not feeling well.

Buying Tiles

I will not be staying the whole day at work today. I am working up to noon time then I have to go with my cousin to a home store. I feel bad doing this. It is not because I do not want to do it but we are going to buy glass tiles and mosaic tiles to fix her house that got flooded during the recent storm.

They got at least 3 feet of water in her finished basement so everything has to be repaired from the floor to the walls. I think the mosaic wall tile has to be replaced too. When she showed me their house right after the storm, I just wanted to cry. They had the basement done not even 6 months ago and now everything has to be repaired again. The last time I spoke to my cousin, she was still waiting for the adjuster to come by their house and estimate the damage.

Little by little their life is getting back to normal. All the material things lost are replaceable or can be repaired. As long as nobody got hurt during the storm is all that matters.

Last Day of Summer

Today is the last of summer. Where did summer go? It is still fresh on my mind the first weekend we went to the lake. That was three months ago already? Time flies. I love fall especially the colors it brings and winter because of the holiday season. It's not that bad as long as you don't stay outside too long. I love dressing up during this season.
So what do we have on the last day of summer? The temperature is ok, we are in the 70's but very humid then later in the day, we are expecting some thunderstorms in the afternoon. Tomorrow is going to be all rain. I just hope that the weekend is not a total washout.

I am going back to school starting next month. It is not going an online class this time. I have to be in school twice a week, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. after my work. It is tough since I am still working full time but I am willing to make sacrifices to finish my studies. I am also motivated by another mom who is also in school like me. Our friendship started when we were in the same class last summer. She is taking computer and environmental engineering on a full scholarship. When I opened my email this morning, I saw this message “orders from home" right away. It was sent by my step brother who went home to the Philippines for a two week vacation. He lives in London but we communicate every day through social networking sites. He visited my mom and he said that she is alright, resting in her newly built rest house and busy furnishing it. The list of what to buy was an attachment to the email. First on the lists are rain chains. You know my mom loves plant and landscaping so much that when it rains she always prays that the water that flows down from the spout will not damage her lawn. I do not know about rain chains before but when I saw some chains rain at my neighbor’s house, I suggested them to my mom. Actually, I bought her three rain chain cups and sent them through a friend. She was so happy about it. She right away knew what they were for. Now my brother built her a new rest house so I have to send new sets of rain chains. I think we may still have some brand new ones in our basement. They will be shipped as soon as possible together with our Christmas gifts for them.

I think my daughter is getting used to a lot of homework now. I gave credit to her first grade teacher but second grade is more independent. When she was on first grade, her teacher will give out a sheet of paper with all the assignments and tests for the whole week but with second grade, she has her own planner (provided by the school) where she copies the homework given by the teacher. Tonight we did 4: nj workbook pg 13 for language, workbook pg 5 for spelling, workbook page r1-5 for math, finish packet and study for science test for wednesday.

Planning To Watch The Australian Open

We are a tennis family and we love watching tournaments especially the grand slam to see our favorite players play live. We are lucky that we live very close to New York City making it so convenient for us to go to the U.S. Open every year. We were just there two weeks ago and we have done these for almost ten years now.

Our next plan is to see the Australian Open, which is the first grand slam tournament every year. It is not that cheap and convenient like when we go the U.S. Open but I think we can still get some good deals. First accommodation is already free courtesy of some friends who live down under. All we have to worry is how to get cheap flights to Australia. We are quite familiar with the rates of international flights going to the Philippines from New York but we have not tried direct to Australia from New York via Singapore Airlines. What we are not sure yet if we go to Australia first before Philippines or the other way around. This is a dream for me and Isabella but for hubby it is an overdue visit to his friends. Hubby lived in Australia for two years before he moved to the U.S. and had never came back to visit. This is the most awaited moment his friends are waiting – to see him more than ten years after. We will make it happen very soon.

A Friend From Texas

When we went out to eat lunch today, we saw my husband's friend at the restaurant. He used to live in the area until the family moved to Texas few years ago when Dallas real estate was on demand to a lot of Filipino families. When hubby's friend was still looking for Dallas homes for sale, we knew it because we happened to see a for sale sign at their New Jersey home. They got fed up of the cold weather at the east coast which cause them to look for Dallas homes for sale just before retirement and also the high cost of living here prompted them to relocate.

I asked my husband if we are relocating too when it is our time to retire and you know what he said? He said, we are not relocating but we are going back to Philippines. Sounds a good idea to me but realistically, when that time comes, i really do not know. Maybe during the winter season, we can escape the snow by staying in the Philippines then come back here when it gets warmer. That was just a thought. It is too early to say. Anything can still happen.

Autumn Cool

We've been starting to feel the autumn weather for the past two days. Mornings were in the high 40's temperature and the night becomes a little chilly if you leave your windows open. I Am Not With Them Anymore

I am not really knowledgeable about our health plan at work because my husband included me and Isabella at his job’s medical plan after we got married to save insurance premiums. I was still single when I got my job’s medical plan and at that time, I only pay $10.00 every month. Those were the days and those days are gone.

On this new plan they have at work, all I hear from my co-workers are complaints, high deductible and co-pay. There is one here that his 65 year old wife is sick and needs a lot of medications that cost him up to thousands of dollars. My neighbor always tells me this line every time it rains but not referring to the recent amount of rain we had from hurricane Irene. It was too much causing floods in many areas. The first time I saw him after the storm, I told him to always be careful for what he wish for sometimes. He smiled and he said, that is not what he meant by wishing for rain.

I know what he is saying. My neighbor has a huge vegetable garden at his backyard that he to water everyday especially during summer time. He always do rain harvesting and save that water in the rain water barrels lined up next to his garden. He can never have enough of these rain barrels. He is always looking for rain barrels for sale so that he can buy them and add to his collection. I have never seen a time that all these barrels got full of water; only during the hurricane that it filled up all his containers. His plants were not damaged by the storm but just got flatten on the ground because of the strong wind. Now they are back to life, all healthy and green.

Did you watch the Ms. Universe Pageant 2011 live on nbc last night? I did, with live updates on facebook. I feel bad for people in the west coast; they miss the thrill of waiting who will be crowned as ms universe because of the three hour time difference. It should have been live simultaneously.
Fast forward after the question and answer, I think shamcey did well in her answer. There is no right or wrong answer to that question. It's not a major major booboo for her. I thought she will get to the top 3. To me, I think she deserves more than being on the third runner up with ms. Angola as the winner. I thought it will a angola vs. Philippines in the end. Ms. Angola was my favorite too. My top three were: philippines, angola and china. Only angola made to the top three.

Over At The Other Town

When we went to the mall today, we passed by the town that got affected by the flood. Little by little they are trying to get back to their normal lives. We saw one house located very close to the river that was badly damaged. It seems that it is beyond repair already. At the driveway, we saw a washing machine full of debris and the classic mailboxes were gone. How did we know it was gone? Only the post at the end of the drive was left standing. Where Were You On September 11, 2001?

Today marks the 10th year anniversary of the 9/11 World Trade Attack in new York City. I was teary eyed this morning watching the memorial services at the new memorial spot in ground zero while the kids, brothers, sisters, parents, family members and friends mention the names of the almost 3000 people who died on that day. My prayers are with the family who lost their loved ones and the heroes of 9/11.

So where was I during that exact time ten years ago? I was at the First Union Bank in NJ, about 15 miles away from the World Trade Center, working as a teller. The only news media we had was a radio. I think we have a TV at the break room but for some reason it was not working that time. My work computer does not have internet and the smartphones or iphones are not existing yet. I could not remember how we first learned about the attack, either from a walk in customer or from the radio. I remember my supervisor just said, "the world trade center is gone." I immediately called my family in the Philippines (thank god i have a phone card with me) and told them I am ok. They were already watching the 9/11 attack on cnn. We were not sent home right away, maybe around 2pm, the bank closed early. When i was driving home and listening on the radio, that was the time the reality started to sink in, more so when i turned my tv at home. It was so unreal. I could not believe it was happening.

I have not been to the ground zero after the attack. Maybe this 10th year we will go.

My ME Time

I just came home from dropping off my daughter to school. Mommy dropping her off is normal to her since I do that every day but what really excites her is I will be picking her up when she gets off from school. I already told the sitter that she does not have to go and pick up Isabella today.

So what are my plans for the day? I will be doing some errands then stop by the post office to drop off a package. This is also my chance to look for the best bra for playing tennis. I want one with a good support and if I can get a seamless shape wear it would be better since my tennis outfit is light colored. I have a favorite sports bra but I need two more extra since I play tennis three times a week now. I hope I can get one in black and one in tan color. My husband is even suggesting that I should buy more than two but I think that two is enough. I will just do laundry more often.

So that will be my ME time for today. I know it will go by fast. Before I knew it, my day of over. Have a nice weekend everyone.

No Work Again Due To Flooding

We were not allowed to go to work today because the river that runs through the town at my job is expected to crest today. There is no more rain but when they say the river will crest, it is the time where the water is at its highest and this happens after the rain. I did not know that. I never heard of a river cresting in the Philippines. Back home, it gets flooded during the rain.

My heart is with those people who are continuously affected by the flooded. I have seen some residents being rescued from their homes yesterday. Boats were literally brought at their doorstep so that they can get out of the flooded area. This was the scene i saw on my way home. They have suffered so much already. I always say a prayer for them.

I could not totally say thank you for all these gadget games but sometimes i need them for a moment. Here is my daughter with her at the park. It has been almost two weeks since hurricane Irene struck the east coast, the damage to a lot of people can be felt for many months or even years to others. He had planned on buying this Jeep Cherokee at the West Palm Beach dealer but he delayed it until he got relocated in New Jersey. How he wished he could just bought a used car on West Palm Beach, Florida.

Now he is back to work but with a rental car. He is still working it out with his insurance company. For the meantime, my co-worker keeps on checking the West Palm Beach car blog reading some information on his next car. Does he want another Jeep Cherokee? He said, Yes.

Back To Regular Schedule

Today is the second day of school but it is the first day of their regular schedule. They opened last Friday on a half day schedule only. So since today is their first regular day, my daughter brought all her needed supplies so that she can put them in the lockers provided by the school. The school lockers are located right at the hallway and very accessible to the kids when they need something. They do not have those huge commercial lockers but just enough that they can fit several books and supplies. It is a big help for my daughter because she has heavy books plus her notebooks and folders.

Tonight on my way home, I will try to stop by a store and buy a lock for her locker. I am getting the combination lock so that she does not have to worry about the keys anymore. It will not take a week and she will lose them but with the combination lock, all she has to do is memorize the code. I know she can easily memorize the numbers but my only worry is how long can she hold without loosing the combination lock itself. Let us see what happens in the next few days.

Squeezing Herself In For Autographs

It did not take long until she realized why kids go after the tennis players. She wants to do it too. So in every game we watch at the U.S. Open, we tried to finish the match so that she can wait for the players to sign autographs. It is also the first time that they gave away autographs books at the entrance. She probably was able to do like 12 signatures. Next year, I have to get that big tennis ball for her.

When I was still single, I used to go shopping every week, not minding at all if an item is on sale or not. When I see a dress, shoes or handbag that I like, I just buy them as long as I can afford the price. I go to work five times a week in an outfit with the same color shoes and purse. I was not The Chic Saver.

Everything has changed when I started to have my own family, especially when I had my baby. I still love shopping but before I go shop, I make sure I have my coupons to get discounts for the items I am planning to buy. I use them to shop for clothes, food or even to have a haircut. I just realized how much I could have saved if I was a shopper like I am now. Even when I go shopping online, I never pay for freight charges since I have the free shipping codes to get the items I buy shipped to me at no charge.

Who taught me to become a chic saver? Nobody but as I mature with a growing responsibility to my family, I learned how to be smart especially on money matters. I am now a smart shopper but my husbandalways calls me, the coupon mom.

How Was Your Labor Day?

It was a slow day for us. After I checked the online Canadian pharmacy, i started my laundry while my husband was still out playing tennis. It was my homework to check Canadian pharmacy for my friend whose wife is sick. I do not know if he was planning to buy plavix from them but he asked me to do it for him because they still do not have power in their area up to now. I know he wanted to buy actonel medicine but he wants to add more to save on shipping.

It was around 12 noon when hubby came home then we went to his friend house for lunch. It was a short notice that i did not even got a chance to cook something so we stopped by a pastry shop to bring some dessert. After lunch, we planned of stopping by the mall but when we saw how the parking was packed we decided to go home instead. I guess everybody was in the mall to take advantage of the labor day sale. I missed it this time. It's okay, i would rather be home, watch the U.S. open and rest for tomorrow. I am back to my regular routine of bringing my daughter to school before going to work. Summer is over.

At The Smash Zone

Arthur Ashe Kids' Day at the U.S. Open was scheduled August 27 but was cancelled because of hurricane Irene. When we went to the U.S. Open, we found out that they had the smash zones during the regular games day so my daughter was still able to enjoy their games for kids. She is into playing tennis so she tried this challenge of hitting the most balls into the wall. I was impressed on how she made it. She is really into tennis now.
