When we went to Costco last Sunday we were not able to buy our favorite rice Lucky Brand jasmine rice. The shelf was empty but there were some varieties still available. We thought that maybe because it is a weekend and almost everybody is doing their food shopping, they ran out or were not able to refill the shelves. It happened once before but when we went back they brought the stocks from the uppers shelves to the floor. So, no big deal, we will go back next weekend we said.
Last night in the news, they were talking about rice rationing in some stores in the U.S. What? Two warehouse clubs, sams and Costco announced to limit rice purchases by customers due to what they call “recent supply and demand trends.” Sams club limits your purchase to 4 bags at a time of imported jasmine, basmati and long grain rice. They could not comment if this is due to shortage of rice or customers are just stocking up in anticipation of higher prices. Costco has put signs in some of their stores as to how many a customer is allowed to purchase.
Now I told papa, we should not be picky with rice. We love jasmine rice but for now, whatever is on the shelf we should buy it before we start eating french fries and mashed potatoes for lunch and dinner.
I just called Costco before I posted this, still they don’t have jasmine rice and they do not know when they are going to have it!!!

I thought only the Philippines have this 'rice crisis' but after reading your post, i was muted. Well, i still believe that there's plenty of rice to provide the demand, my opinion is, "just stocking up in anticipation of higher prices" (copied from your post)... it's so true.
i've guess, you just be contented with what is available then.hehehehe.for me,i bought some basmati rice from costco last weekend.they are okay.i also believe that some are hoarding rice for the anticipation of higher pricing.too bad but hoarding is happening anywhere.
yeah...i agree with simpleyesa..i thought too that only here in philippines have rice crisis..hope soon this will end
I read on the Yahoo news the other night that the Sams Club is now limiting the people to purchase rice.
Me and my husband buy our grocery at the comissary which also sells my favorite rice' "JASMINE RICE". I always bought a 20 lbs rice hehehehe. The price of rice really went up
wow. rice crisis also in the states??? well, i know that americans are not fond of rice, they eat mashed potatoes, burgers, pizza. But Filipinos there are the ones affected. i wonder what is really going on. I heard from the news that rice shortage could be an effect of the global climate change that we have today. Otherwise, I hope that some people will care enough not to hoard rice because of the alleged price increases.
here in spain too the price of rice is 30%more. it means more expensive than usual.Report said there is a shortage supply of rice .
so do i in indonesia :) have rice crisis.
